About Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation surgery is a procedure that adds shape and fullness to the breasts to produce a supple and attractive appearance. This surgery is widely known as one of the most sought-out cosmetic surgeries of all time because of the thrilling results it provides to women who are unhappy with the appearance of their breasts. Using implants or fat from the patient's body, this enhancement surgery improves breast shape and size and results in an appealing and youthful outcome. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Timothy Katzen has years of experience in executing this highly personalized procedure and performs numerous breast augmentations every year. During your consultation at J. Timothy Katzen, M.D. Beverly Hills, Dr. Katzen will assess your concerns and desires and inform you of your many available options. From there, he will be able to customize a surgical plan to meet your goals.
During your initial consultation with Dr. Katzen, your ideal implant will be selected based on your body frame and the results you wish to achieve. Implants for augmentation come in an assortment of sizes, profiles, shapes, and even textures. All of these aspects are taken into consideration to create the desired appearance. Today, the most commonly used implant types are made of saline or silicone. Both of these materials are approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for safe and effective use to augment the breasts. It's important to mention that patients considering implants made with saline must be at least 18 years of age while those must be at least 22 years of age in order to receive silicone inserts. Other possible considerations include gummy bear implants and fat grafting (known as a fat transfer). Aside from the type of augmentation chosen, there are numerous other factors to consider.
Implant size is distinguished based on the number of CCs (cubic centimeters) of silicone or saline used. To determine the right amount, Dr. Katzen will measure how much original breast tissue exists and the size you hope to achieve. During surgery, it is common for Dr. Katzen to temporarily switch out various implants to get an idea on a better fit. Implant sizes typically range from 120 – 960 CCs.
Breast implants come in either a round or teardrop (anatomical) shape. Both styles are commonly used, but the style chosen for you will depend on your aesthetic preferences. Typically, round inserts add fullness to the top portion of the breasts while teardrop-shaped implants focus their volume to the bottom half of the breasts.
Breast implant profile refers to the projection of the breasts. Meaning, this is what is visible from the side view. The most common projections typically include low, medium, high, and extra high.
Making Your Choices
While the sheer amount of options you have may seem overwhelming, determining the appropriate implant shape, size, and style is easy once your desires have been made clear. Dr. Katzen will help you at every step of the decision-making process to ensure that you receive a result that suits your body frame and satisfies your wants.

"I had arms that flapped after I lost a significant amount of weight. I went to Dr. Katzen for an arm lift and you would never be able to tell I had anything done. Dr. Katzen placed the incisions carefully where you wouldn't see them unless I raised my arms. My scars are healing very well. I can't wait for my incisions to fade like many of his post ops that I met."- H.C. / Google / Oct 18, 2019
The choice to go through with mammoplasty (breast augmentation) surgery is highly personal. If you are thinking about having this procedure, it's pertinent that you do it for yourself and nobody else. To be considered, you should be healthy with breasts that are fully developed. You should also be the proper age to receive implants (18 years old for saline and 22 years for silicone). If you are dissatisfied with the size and shape of your breasts because they seem shapeless, you may benefit from this cosmetic breast treatment. In addition, if your breasts have been affected by aging, nursing, or weight loss, this cosmetic treatment can bring them back to life with increased volume. It is also a welcomed option if you lift weights or have little to no native breast tissue.
Incision type, as well as implant placement, are discussion points that are generally made ahead of surgery. During the procedure, an incision is created and the chosen breast implant will be slipped into its position. There are a couple of methods that may be employed for implant placement. These include either submuscular placement (under the pec muscle) or submammary/subglandular placement (over the pec muscle). Where to place the implant is based on numerous factors, including the overall type and size of the implant, along with the professional opinion of Dr. Katzen. No matter where the incision is placed, scarring is generally minimal. Implant placement is determined based on your body type, implant size, and lifestyle.
What to Expect
Breast augmentation is performed as an outpatient surgery using general anesthesia. Following the incision, the implant chosen for enhancement will be moved through the incision and deposited into a surgically created pocket, and then fitted into its proper position. Once the implant is in position, the incision is closed with sutures or surgical adhesives. All patients will be taken to a private recovery space and observed and monitored before being released. You will be sent home wearing a recovery compression bra to assist with swelling. Within a few days, the bruising and swelling will start to slowly go away, and the breasts will begin to feel normal as they fall into their new positions. A large percentage of patients can engage in normal activities within a few days; however, exercise should be avoided for a minimum of 6 – 8 weeks. Cosmetic breast surgery produces beautiful outcomes that look and feel both normal and natural. This treatment, in most cases, can be life-changing for many women, allowing them the chance to feel more comfortable in their own skin.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a breast lift or augmentation?
Your plan may include breast augmentation, a lift, or both. A breast lift removes excess skin and improves the breasts while augmentation addresses the size and shape of the breasts. During your consultation with Dr. Katzen, he will listen to your needs and goals before explaining your treatment options. A combination augmentation and lift are often a part of a mommy makeover to rejuvenate the breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Can I breastfeed with implants?
If you want to breastfeed after breast augmentation, be sure to tell Dr. Katzen during your consultation. It is usually possible to breastfeed after implants with the right surgical technique and placement. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can alter your results so it is best to wait until after you are done having children to have breast augmentation.
Can I have my implants removed?
You may decide that you want to replace or remove your implants. If this happens, Dr. Katzen can perform breast revision surgery. During the revision surgery, your current implants can either be replaced with new implants or removed. If you choose to have your implants removed, you may need to have excess skin removed since larger implants can stretch your skin. If you have any questions or concerns after your augmentation surgery, schedule an appointment at our office in Beverly Hills, CA to discuss your options.
Do implants cause breast cancer?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating a link between implants and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). This is not breast cancer but a cancer of the immune cells. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), implant-related ALCL is very rare and when caught early, it is easy to treat. Dr. Katzen encourages all patients with implants to get regular screenings for breast cancer. You should contact our team if you notice any concerns, such as swelling or other visible changes.
