Years after illegal silicone injections, symptoms can become more noticeable and may include pain, pressure, discomfort, and fear that the material is moving through the body. Our patient is a 39-year-old Hispanic female who had illegal silicone injections placed in her buttocks in Chile in 2011. She came to Dr. Katzen because of buttock pain and discomfort, and she was concerned that the product may have migrated to her lower back and right thigh. She underwent open silicone injection removal of the buttocks with a posterior butt lift under general anesthesia. During surgery, Dr. Katzen used the open technique to directly see and remove affected tissue. This allows careful removal of as much silicone, scar tissue, inflammatory tissue, and damaged tissue as safely possible. The posterior butt lift was performed to remove compromised tissue while lifting and reshaping the buttocks after silicone removal. This is important because silicone can cause hard areas, inflammation, tissue changes, and contour problems that may worsen over time. Her photos were taken 2 years after surgery, and she achieved remarkable results. Most importantly, our patient feels much relief from her pain after surgery. This case demonstrates how open silicone removal and posterior butt lift surgery can help patients with illegal buttock injection complications, suspected silicone migration, and chronic buttock discomfort move toward a safer and more comfortable outcome.

Silicone Complication Case

Many patients do not realize that illegal silicone injections can cause delayed problems more than a decade later.  Our patient is a 39-year-old Hispanic female who had illegal silicone injections placed into her buttocks in Chile in 2011.  Years later, she came to Dr. Katzen because she was experiencing pain and discomfort in the buttock region and feared the product may have migrated from her buttocks into her lower back and right thigh.  She was placed under general anesthesia for silicone injection removal using the open technique combined with a posterior butt lift.  During surgery, Dr. Katzen made an incision across the upper buttock area to access the affected tissues.  This open silicone removal approach allows the surgeon to remove as much silicone, scar tissue, inflammatory tissue, and damaged tissue as safely possible.  Because injected silicone can spread through tissue, harden, and create chronic inflammation, it may not be safely removed with suction alone.  The posterior butt lift helped remove compromised tissue and lift and reshape the buttocks.  Her photos were taken 2 years after surgery, and our patient achieved remarkable results.  Most importantly, she feels relief from her pain.  This case shows how open technique silicone removal and posterior butt lift surgery can help patients dealing with illegal buttock injection complications, suspected migration, lower back discomfort, and long-term buttock pain.
