What is Vaginoplasty?

Women have a lot to worry about, and they don't want discomfort and low self-esteem caused by stretched vaginal walls to be one of these worries. Vaginoplasty (also called surgical vaginal rejuvenation or reshaping) is a surgical procedure performed to tighten and strengthen the walls of the vagina, which may become lax over time due to childbirth, age, genetics, or significant weight loss. At our Beverly Hills, CA office, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Timothy Katzen offers surgical vaginal rejuvenation to tighten the vaginal wall and/or reshape the inner and outer labia. If you're uncomfortable with the appearance of your vagina, or if you experience vaginal pain or soreness, schedule a consultation with Dr. Katzen to learn more about vaginoplasty at J. You could be a candidate for a vaginoplasty if you:

  • Want to increase your sexual satisfaction
  • Are seeking to restore your self-confidence and sexuality
  • Are intimidated by the thought of wearing tight or revealing clothing, like bathing suits
  • Experience pain or soreness during sex or other activities

What to expect during vaginoplasty

Vaginoplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure in an accredited surgical center with the patient under general anesthesia. The surgery will begin with Dr. Katzen creating incisions in discreet locations on the sides of the vagina and then gently tightening the muscle tissue beneath the skin. The vaginal opening will also be reduced in size by removing a portion of the vaginal lining (mucosa). If you plan to combine your vaginoplasty with a labiaplasty, Dr. Katzen will perform the labiaplasty surgery afterward. Following your procedure, Dr. Katzen will carefully close the incisions for optimal results and minimal scarring.

how long is recovery after vaginoplasty?

You can expect a bit of pain and tenderness following the surgery. Swelling and bruising are also common following a vaginoplasty procedure. It's recommended that you avoid sexual intercourse, tampon use, or strenuous exercise for about 4 – 6 weeks. In most circumstances, you will be able to return to seated work in about a week with a full return to daily activities at around three months. After recovering from the surgical procedure, you can expect a renewed vaginal opening that looks and feels slimmer and tighter. Some patients even report heightened sensitivity and increased friction during intercourse.

How long do vaginoplasty results last?
The majority of patients will only need one vaginoplasty in their lifetime because the results are enduring and long-lasting. However, your outcomes could be compromised if you gain or lose a lot of weight, become pregnant, or give birth vaginally.

Can I get pregnant after my surgery?
Dr. Katzen advises patients considering vaginoplasty to be past their planned pregnancies because childbirth can drastically affect your surgical outcomes. If you plan to have more children, you should postpone your procedure until your family is complete. If you do become pregnant after vaginoplasty, you may have an additional surgery to refresh your results.

Are there any risks from vaginoplasty?
The most common risks of vaginoplasty are bleeding, infection, and scarring. Vaginoplasty is considered a safe procedure with very few side effects. In fact, the adverse effects of pregnancy are greater than those associated with this surgery.
