After losing 147 lbs, our patient was ready to continue the body transformation she had already started with Dr. Katzen. Our patient is a 45-year-old Black female who had previously been morbidly obese and reached a highest weight of 312 lbs. Through dieting, exercise, and RNY gastric bypass, she eventually reached her lowest weight of 165 lbs. In 2020, she came to Dr. Katzen to have excess skin removed from around her abdomen. This time, she returned because the loose, hanging skin on her arms still bothered her and did not match the progress she had made. Dr. Katzen performed an arm lift, also known as a brachioplasty, while she was under general anesthesia. During this post-weight-loss body-contouring procedure, Dr. Katzen removed excess upper-arm skin and tissue, then tightened and reshaped the remaining skin to create a smoother arm contour. Arm lift surgery after massive weight loss is designed for patients who have stretched skin that cannot shrink back with exercise alone. Brachioplasty can help reduce the “bat wing” appearance, improve upper arm shape, and make the arms look more proportional to the rest of the body. Photos were taken 3 months after surgery, and our patient achieved remarkable results. This case shows how upper arm skin removal can be an important step after weight loss from obesity, RNY surgery, diet, and exercise, especially for patients completing their transformation in stages.

Returning to Dr. Katzen allowed our patient to continue refining the body she had worked so hard to change. Our patient is a 45-year-old Black female who had previously been morbidly obese and reached a highest weight of 312 lbs. Through dieting, exercise, and RNY gastric bypass, she reached her lowest weight of 165 lbs. After losing 147 lbs, she came to Dr. Katzen in 2020 to have excess abdominal skin removed. This time, her goal was to address the loose, hanging skin on her arms that remained after massive weight loss. She was placed under general anesthesia for an arm lift, also known as brachioplasty. During surgery, Dr. Katzen removed excess upper-arm skin and tissue, then tightened the remaining skin to improve arm contour and reduce sagging. This procedure is commonly performed for post-bariatric and post-weight-loss patients because the skin on the arms can stretch significantly and may not return to a tighter shape on its own. Arm lift surgery can help create smoother, slimmer-looking arms and improve the overall balance of the upper body. Photos were taken 3 months after surgery, and our patient achieved remarkable results. This case highlights how brachioplasty can help complete a staged body transformation after obesity, RNY surgery, diet, and exercise by treating the loose arm skin that weight loss alone cannot correct. The goal was to create smoother arms that matched the rest of her post-weight-loss transformation.
