This is a Black male patient, age 46, who is 5'5" and was more than 419 pounds in weight. Over 204 pounds were lost via diet and exercise. He developed additional skin rolls on every portion of his body after losing weight. More precisely, he was dissatisfied with the appearance of his back rolls. His goal was to permanently eliminate the excess fat and skin folds from his back. He sought optimal outcomes, irrespective of the final scar. He traveled from New York to California to see Dr. J. Timothy Katzen.  Dr. Katzen and the patient discussed options, including a vertical torsoplasty, horizontal torsoplasty, and back liposuction. The best surgery for this patient was determined to be a vertical torsoplasty. He underwent a back lift, or vertical torsoplasty.  A back or upper body lift is an alternative name for this procedure. Three to four hours are required to complete this operation under general anesthesia. The procedure involves the removal of a substantial quantity of surplus skin and fat from the side of the chest during a vertical torsoplasty. About 6 lbs. were removed from the sides of the upper back. The placement of a drain on each side is customary. Typically, the drains stay in for ten to fourteen days, contingent upon their drainage. The patient is ecstatic about his results. Although the scar does not bother him, the permanent disappearance of his skin folds and back fat is a relief, as they served as a constant reminder of his former weight.
