Liposuction is the world's most common and most popular cosmetic procedure. Liposuction has a lot of benefits, including producing almost instant results.

One of the questions we frequently get is, are liposuction results permanent? The short answer is yes, they are. However, if you are considering liposuction, you should have much more information before scheduling your liposuction surgery.

Liposuction Permanently Gets Rid of Resected Fat Cells

One reason some patients hesitate to choose liposuction is that they are concerned their results will not be permanent. However, almost all liposuction procedures are performed with one goal in mind - to remove fat cells.

Liposuction is targeted to specific parts of the body and is very effective in removing stubborn fat cells. Once those resected fat cells have been removed, they are gone forever.

How Does Liposuction Work?

When patients come to Dr. Katzen for liposuction, they undergo an outpatient procedure that lasts between one to three hours. The length of each session depends on the number of areas being treated.

Usually, Dr. Katzen performs liposuction under general anesthesia. Once administered, Dr. Katzen makes a small incision under the skin. Tumescent solution is injected to minimize bleeding and optimize fat removal. Then, a cannula is placed in the incision. The cannula removes fat by suction.

When the necessary amount of fat has been removed, the cannula is removed, and Dr. Katzen closes the incision. Immediately after surgery, a nurse will care for the patient’s incisions and help manage any discomfort until they are ready to be discharged.

Understanding Fat Cells

In order to comprehend why liposuction is permanent, it is important to understand how the body’s fat cells work. Every adult has a set number of total fat cells, which is determined by genetics. Fat cells either shrink or grow, depending on weight gain or loss.

Usually, the number of fat cells in the body does not change. However, there are exceptions. The first exception is in cases of extreme weight gain. When fat cells expand too much, they can divide to create new fat cells. The second exception is when the number of fat cells in the body is reduced through liposuction.

Can Fat Return After Liposuction?

The body naturally creates new fat cells to replace the old fat cells that have died. However, even though new fat cells are always being created, the total number of fat cells in the body remains the same.

Once removed with liposuction, resected fat cells will not regenerate or grow back in most cases. Patients who remain at their post-lipo weight will have the best results. Patients who gain a minimal amount of weight back (5 pounds, for example) will have fat cells that get slightly larger. However, their new body shape will still be visible.

Patients who gain a lot of weight may have new fat cells develop, even in the areas that received liposuction. However, the treated areas will accumulate less fat than other areas. Those patients will still look better than they would have without liposuction.

If you choose liposuction for fat removal, you will always have a reduction in your fat cells. However, optimal liposuction results require maintenance on your part to keep your results.

How to Maintain Your Liposuction Results Long-Term

Dr. Katzen’s goal for his patients is for them to continue to see excellent results from liposuction. Keeping those results requires maintenance on the patient’s part. Dr. Katzen makes several recommendations after liposuction.

  • Every patient is different. Dr. Katzen will provide post-procedure instructions that are based on your individual needs. Patients should follow all instructions completely for the best results.

  • Patients should plan on eating or continuing to eat a low-calorie, high-protein healthy diet. This diet is heavily focused on consuming healthy carbohydrates and an adequate amount of protein.

  • Patients should drink the required amount of water every day to stay well-hydrated. The recommended amount is 64 ounces per day, but depending on what each patient needs, the amount Dr. Katzen recommends may vary.

  • Regular exercise offers many health benefits, and Dr. Katzen will recommend for each patient to make it a normal part of their daily routine. Even a small amount of exercise each day can have excellent results.

  • The body requires fuel to stay healthy. Patients should never be tempted to skip meals. Rather, they should focus on consuming nutritious meals that give their bodies what they need.

Dr. Katzen will go over the liposuction procedure with you and answer any questions you may have. Dr. Katzen will also talk with you about the importance of committing to maintaining your results based on his personal recommendations for your body.

Are You a Candidate for Liposuction?

The ideal liposuction candidates are patients who are at healthy weight, and yet, they struggle with pockets of fat that simply will not budge. Liposuction should not be viewed as a weight loss or skin-tightening solution.

Liposuction is best suited for men and women who are at a healthy, stable weight and who have good skin elasticity. Women are encouraged to wait until after they no longer plan to have children because if they get pregnant following liposuction, their liposuction results will be diminished.
