Should You Get a Thigh Lift After Massive Weight Loss?
7/20/2022
Achieving your weight loss goals should make you feel proud, confident, and accomplished. For many men and women, however, extreme weight loss leads to a host of new cosmetic concerns, including loose skin and stubborn fat. The thighs are particularly susceptible to this phenomenon, leaving patients with saggy, deflated-looking upper legs. To help correct this issue, plastic surgeon Dr. J. Timothy Katzen and the award-winning team at J. Timothy Katzen, M.D. Beverly Hills offer thigh lift surgery. Here, we will explore the benefits of thighplasty surgery after weight loss.
What is a thigh lift?
Also known as a thighplasty or thigh reduction, the thigh lift is a popular body contouring procedure. A thigh lift is a common procedure for patients who have lost a great deal of weight (50 – 100 pounds or more). Because the skin has been stretched for many years and has lost elasticity over time, weight loss patients are often left with loose skin, stretch marks, cellulite, and stubborn fat on the inner and outer thighs – all of which can be improved with a thigh lift.
How does thigh lift surgery work?
Because every patient is unique, Dr. Katzen customizes each thigh lift procedure to match the individual’s needs and goals. Based on the patient’s specific concerns, anatomy, and other factors, Dr. Katzen will recommend one of the following types of thigh lifts:
- Crescent thigh lift: This procedure involves a crescent-shaped incision placed at the top of the thigh near the area where it meets the torso. If needed, liposuction can be performed to remove stubborn pockets of fat in the thigh. Dr. Katzen then trims away loose skin and pulls the remaining skin tightly over the newly slimmed thigh contour, securing the incision with sutures. Typically, crescent thigh lift scars can typically be concealed beneath clothing and swimsuits.
- Long incision thigh lift: The long incision thigh lift requires a vertical incision on the inner thigh, running the length of the inner thigh. While this does result in more visible scarring compared with a crescent thigh lift, it allows Dr. Katzen to remove the greatest amount of skin and fat.
In some cases, an additional incision on the outer thigh and/or beneath the buttocks will be needed.
Does a thigh lift help with cellulite?
Many patients will enjoy improvements in the appearance of cellulite and stretch marks following thigh lift surgery, but the primary purpose of thigh lift surgery is to remove excess skin and fat. If you do have concerns about stretch marks or cellulite on your thighs, do not hesitate to discuss these with Dr. Katzen so that your surgical plan can be tailored to meet your specific thigh needs and goals.
