Will Thigh Lift Scars Be Visible In A Bikini?
1/25/2022
Thigh lift surgery can be one of the most transformative and liberating experiences a person can go through in life. For patients who have lost a significant amount of weight or have developed loose thigh skin, the thigh lift offers an opportunity to restore a smooth, slender, sexy, younger leg shape. This new thigh shape is virtually impossible to achieve with diet and exercise alone. However, like many skin removal surgeries, the thigh lift results in some visible scarring. At J. Timothy Katzen, M.D. Beverly Hills, plastic surgeon and after weight loss surgery specialist Dr. J. Timothy Katzen shares in his patients’ desires to keep surgical scarring to a minimum and uses the most advanced tools and techniques available to make that a reality. Read on for a closer look at what to expect after thigh lift surgery, including where your incisions will be and if your scars will be visible in clothing or swimsuits.
How is a thigh lift performed?
Thigh lift surgery – also known as a thighplasty – is performed as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia and may take up to 1 – 3 hours to complete. Patients require an overnight stay in the hospital or surgical facility, especially when combined with additional body contouring procedures, such as the 360 lower body lift. To begin, Dr. Katzen uses liposuction to remove stubborn pockets of thigh fat. Then, Dr. Katzen carefully removes excess thigh skin and pulls the remaining skin taut over the thigh for a slim, tight, sexy new look. Next, several drains are inserted, and the thigh incision is closed with sutures.
Where are thigh lift incisions located?
The majority of thigh lift procedures are performed using one of the following types of incision:
1) Crescent incision: An arc-shaped incision placed along the line where the upper inner thigh meets the pelvis or groin. This incision follows the bottom of the panty line. Sometimes, the upper thigh incision extends under the buttocks. This type of thigh lift is called a crescent thigh reduction because a crescent area of the inner thigh skin and fat is removed.
2) Modified longitudinal vertical medial thigh lift: Thigh liposuction is performed during this type of thigh reduction. Then, an incision is made from the groin partially down the inner thigh.
3) Longitudinal vertical medial thigh lift incision: This type of thigh reduction is similar to the modified longitudinal vertical medial thigh lift. However, the inner thigh incision extends from the groin to the inner knee during a longitudinal vertical medial thigh lift.
Dr. Katzen will recommend the most appropriate thigh lift based on your concerns, desired outcome, anatomy, and how much thigh skin needs to be removed.
Can you see the thigh lift scars in a swimsuit?
Men who wear long swim trunks or board-style shorts can conceal their thigh lift scars when they are by the pool or at the beach. Difficulty covering the longitudinal inner thigh lift scar is particularly true for patients who undergo a long incision thigh lift. It may be more challenging for women to hide thigh lift scars in a traditional swimsuit. In most cases, the placement of a crescent incision makes it less visible than a long incision. However, with either type of thigh lift, Dr. Katzen takes great care to place his incisions as inconspicuously as possible to minimize the patient’s visible scarring. Additionally, Dr. Katzen’s caring team will educate the patient on appropriate scar care to encourage healing and fading over time.
For most patients, the dramatic improvement in their leg shape is well worth having some amount of scarring after a thigh lift.
