Often, patients considering buttock implants have many questions before scheduling their initial consultations. While excellent information is found online, not all plastic surgeons approach buttock implant surgery similarly.

As a plastic surgeon, Dr. Katzen is expertly trained and highly experienced in gluteoplasty procedures. Dr. Katzen has performed many buttock implant procedures for his patients.

We want to take this opportunity to answer some of the most frequently asked questions patients as about buttock implants. As always, Dr. Katzen wants his patients to be well-informed about what to expect if they opt for this procedure.

Are Silicone Buttock Implants Safe?

Yes, silicone buttock implants are safe. Dr. Katzen only uses buttock implants which are FDA-approved. Most of Dr. Katzen’s patients experience no complications and enjoy a relatively uneventful recovery.

Weight gain after surgery can cause buttock implants to move and shift in the pocket. Therefore, patients are encouraged to maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen to ensure this does not occur.

Do Silicone Buttock Implants Leak?

Dr. Katzen uses solid, silicone elastomer implants when performing gluteoplasty procedures. This type of silicone is smooth, round, and feels natural.

Silicone elastomer implants are made with material that feels natural to the touch. Because Dr. Katzen uses solid buttock implants, they cannot leak silicone into your body. Therefore, there is no chance of your buttock implants rupturing.

Does Dr. Katzen Offer Different Silicone Buttock Implant Sizes?

Dr. Katzen works with patients of all shapes and sizes, and each patient has their own goals following buttock implant plastic surgery.

During the initial consultation, Dr. Katzen will perform a physical exam and discuss their buttock concerns and goals with the patient. Then, he will help the patient choose the right size and shape for their buttock implants. Buttock implants come in many different sizes. Additionally, buttock implants can be round or anatomic in shape. Numerous options are available to suit each patient’s desired outcome.

Will My Buttock Implants Move After Placement?

After undergoing silicone buttock implant surgery, some buttock implant movement is expected. Buttock implants can be placed above, in, or under the gluteus maximus muscle. Each position has its own benefits and risks. To minimize movement, Dr. Katzen creates a pocket in the gluteus maximus muscles for implant insertion during the procedure. Therefore, once the implants are placed, there is very little chance of migration or movement.

Silicone buttock implants can spin clockwise or counterclockwise inside the buttock once they are placed. This spinning is normal due to the patient’s natural body movements. Usually, Dr. Katzen prefers using round silicone implants as opposed to anatomic, tear-drop-shaped implants. The reason Dr. Katzen prefers the round buttock implants is because if a round buttock implant spins, your buttock retains its shape. If however, an anatomic, pear-shaped buttock implant rotates, the appearance of your buttock will change.

What is the Difference Between Silicone Buttock Injections and Silicone Buttock Implants?

Frequently, patients confuse silicone buttock injections with silicone buttock implants. However, these procedures are not the same.

Dr. Katzen does not offer silicone buttock injections because they are dangerous, not FDA-approved, and are illegal in the United States. However, Dr. Katzen does perform silicone injection removal procedures for patients who have had silicone injections.

A gluteoplasty involves placing solid, FDA-approved silicone implants in the buttocks to enhance the look of the derriere instead of injecting dangerous, illegal silicone.

How Long is Recovery After a Gluteoplasty?

After undergoing buttock implant surgery, patients will be discharged to recover at home. Patients should expect some swelling and bruising, which may last several days.

Dr. Katzen may place drains to allow blood and fluid to drain from the body to promote healing. Drains may be required for about a week. Most patients are ready to return to work and other daily activities within two to three weeks. Dr. Katzen will monitor your progress and healing to determine the best time to return to strenuous activities.

Often, patients are eager to return to the gym or participate in aerobic exercise once they begin feeling better. Dr. Katzen recommends most patients wait at least six weeks to begin an exercise regimen after a gluteoplasty.

When Can I Sit Down After Undergoing Silicone Buttock Implant Surgery?

Patients are asked to refrain from sitting directly on their buttocks for at least two weeks after undergoing a buttock implant procedure. Sitting too soon after the surgery places unnecessary pressure on healing incisions, which may injure the buttocks and prolong the healing process. Likewise, patients are instructed to sleep on their stomachs instead of their backs.

Patients will have several follow-up appointments with Dr. Katzen as they recover. He will advise each patient about sitting and sleeping positions based on their progress. After the two-week mark, patients may be able to sit for short periods and may be advised to use a donut pillow to relieve some of the pressure on the buttocks.

How Much Scarring Should I Anticipate?

Dr. Katzen meticulously places incisions to minimize scarring. Patients undergoing buttock implant procedures will have scars in the natural crease of the buttocks. However, scars are nearly invisible to the naked eye and heal flat.

Eventually, the scars’ color should blend in with the patient’s natural skin tone.

Are Buttock Implants Permanent?

Most patients undergo gluteoplasty procedures because they want a permanent solution to enhance the look of the buttocks. In addition, Dr. Katzen has treated patients needing buttock implant revision, including buttock implant removal and replacement.

The implants can stay in place for years if a patient is happy with the look of their buttocks.
