PRP for Hair Growth

Hair loss is a significant problem for both men and women. PRP for hair growth is a solution that is gaining popularity. Some patients favor PRP over more traditional hair transplant procedures.

Dr. Katzen and his team regularly perform PRP treatment for hair growth in his office. So if you have questions about this procedure, we have the answers.

What is PRP for Hair Growth?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. PRP for hair growth is a hair loss treatment method that has produced excellent results for many patients.

PRP for hair growth works by injecting a patient’s blood into the scalp to encourage hair growth. Some evidence shows that PRP increases hair shaft thickness and the amount of blood supplied to the hair follicle.

How Does PRP Therapy Work?

There are three steps in the PRP therapy process.

  • Step 1 - Dr. Katzen or a team member will draw blood from your arm. The blood is placed in a centrifuge for processing.
  • Step 2 - After about 10 minutes, the centrifuge will separate your blood into three different layers - plasma, platelets, and red blood cells.
  • Step 3 - The plasma and platelets are drawn into a syringe. This fluid is called PRP. Dr. Katzen will use a microneedle to inject the PRP into the areas of the scalp where hair growth is desired.

Because a microneedle is used during this procedure, you will experience minimal pain. In addition, a numbing cream or local anesthesia is used to minimize any discomfort. Typically, the PRP procedure takes about 45 to 60 minutes to complete.

Does PRP Work for All Types of Hair Loss?

PRP works for patients with many types of hair loss. PRP is for women with thinning hair, men with male pattern baldness, and even patients with alopecia. PRP works for young and old patients of all ethnicities.

Injecting platelet-rich plasma is an effective hair growth technique because the platelets stimulate the hair follicle’s growth. This method offers a more natural solution and no risk of rejection because PRP uses your cells.

Does PRP Treatment for Hair Growth Have Any Side Effects?

PRP treatment for hair loss may result in some initial, temporary side effects. Most patients will experience some redness and tenderness at the injection sites for a few days following treatment. However, any pain should be mild and subside in a few days as the area heals.

Rare side effects include:

  • Nerve or blood vessel injury
  • Infection
  • Scar tissue

Dr. Katzen will prescribe pain medication, an anti-inflammatory, and an antibiotic for patients after PRP treatment. Additional medications, such as Rogaine, may also be prescribed to help stimulate hair growth. Dr. Katzen will discuss the medications he recommends with you.

What to Expect After a PRP Hair Growth Procedure

Once you have undergone PRP for hair growth, knowing what you can expect is helpful. Initially, there will be some crusting of blood. This residual blood is normal and will disappear after your first shampoo. After about 2 to 3 months, you should begin seeing treatment results. Complete results often take about 6 to 8 months.

You should not have any downtime following PRP for hair growth. You may want to consider taking a day or two off work, but most patients find they can mostly resume their regular activities.

Who is a Candidate for PRP for Hair Loss?

PRP for hair loss is ideal for patients needing hair restoration without surgery. PRP is minimally invasive and has almost no “downtime.” However, some patients may not be able to undergo this procedure. They include patients who:

  • Take blood thinning medications
  • Smoke heavily
  • Have a history of drug or alcohol abuse
  • Have chronic infections
  • Have cancer
  • Have a low platelet count

If you are a patient with mild to moderate hair loss and desire a less invasive technique than surgery for hair restoration, PRP for hair growth could be right for you.
