what is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing at J. Timothy Katzen, M.D. Beverly Hills is a nonsurgical cosmetic procedure that uses pulsating beams of light to eliminate dead and damaged skin layers. The treatment is performed to address facial lines and wrinkles and for minimizing skin flaws, including acne scars, pigmentation, and other issues. Also known as a laser peel, laser skin resurfacing is an ideal procedure for patients desiring softer, clearer, youthful-looking skin. Depending on the condition and type of skin, the laser may be adjusted accordingly. There is some downtime required with most laser skin resurfacing facials. Any concerns or questions can be discussed with Beverly Hills, CA plastic surgeon Dr. Timothy Katzen during your assessment and consultation.

Types of Laser Treatments

J. Timothy Katzen, M.D. Beverly Hills offers three types of laser skin resurfacing treatments that are chosen based on your skin's needs. Some are performed for milder cases of skin damage while others are more aggressive:

  • Ablative Laser Treatments
Ablative lasers treat thin layers of skin, like a deep chemical peel or dermabrasion, with a precision that allows the technician to reduce skin damage. Ablative lasers are best for firming the skin and treating wrinkles and acne scars.
  • Non-Ablative Laser Treatments
Non-ablative lasers do not remove any skin — the light simply creates micro-damage to the skin to encourage natural skin healing. Non-ablative facials are great for addressing fine lines and wrinkles on patients who are able to wait 2 – 3 months for strong results.
  • Fractional Laser Treatments
Fractional lasers are both ablative and non-ablative and create small holes in the deeper layers of the skin. The skin's self-healing process then produces a tighter, firmer, and healthier complexion. Fractional lasers may also be performed to treat fine lines, acne scarring, sun damage, and pigmentation issues.

am i a candidate for laser skin resurfacing?

There are multiple factors to consider when selecting which laser peel procedure is right for your needs. Laser skin resurfacing is ideal for people who are unhappy with their skin's appearance. If you have skin damaged by the sun, acne scars, age spots, wrinkles and fine lines, redness, or pigmentation troubles, a laser peel treatment can be helpful to improve these complexion blemishes. In addition, a laser peel often works well for those who have scaly patches, rough texture, or other irregularities. This treatment is not recommended if you have very dark skin or active acne. Additionally, it is important to know that there is downtime associated with these laser treatments. Some patients, depending on the condition of their skin, may need up to 2 – 3 weeks for their skin to normalize.

Dr. Katzen removed not one, but two very persistent Plantar warts from my foot. The first was easily removed with a laser, but then, unfortunately, another one bloomed a month later. This one was more stubborn, requiring multiple laser treatments and freezing. Throughout the whole process, Dr. Katzen was patient, thorough and professional. My foot is now free of any warts and I can walk without any discomfort. Thank you, Dr. Katzen!I am adding to this review as Dr. Katzen performed liposuction on my abdominal area as well as my back and chin. I am happy to say that after a year, I am still loving my new body. I can wear a bikini again!

The decision to have any major surgery should never be taken lightly. Surgery can be incredibly daunting; complications can and do occur. With that said, I knew from the beginning that Dr. Katzen was going to be my surgeon after our first meeting. During consultation, Dr. Katzen and his team were incredibly open about the process, including the realities of recovery, follow-ups, and scar treatment. I had two major procedures within the span of 8 weeks. After the first surgery, my body wasn’t too happy about the procedure, to say the least. Dr. Katzen and his team were incredibly communicative and accessible throughout what was a difficult recovery process. Now, 6 months after my first surgery, I know that the hallmark of a great surgeon is how they guide you through any complications you might experience. I was anemic after surgery and had issues with wounds opening, but thankfully, those issues are now behind me. Having major surgery and going through the recovery process is an emotional journey just as much as a physical one. It was painful, I was completely reliant upon others, and it can be expensive. These are all factors one should consider before surgery. However, if someone were to ask me (and ask me they have), if I could, would I do it all over again knowing what I know now? That answer is always a resounding yes. Yes, without question, I am much happier now. And I would pick Dr. Katzen again over anyone else.

how does laser skin resurfacing work?

Before you have a deeper or more intense laser peel treatment, you may be asked to use a retinoid product for a few weeks before your laser peel. This helps prepare the skin for more effective results. Medication will be suggested prior to the treatment to help lessen pain for increased comfort during your session. If your skin requires only mild correction, a topical anesthetic will be used to numb certain areas the laser will target. For the full face or more intense laser treatments, some kind of sedation may be required. During the procedure, you will relax in our treatment chair while the laser glides over the skin, precisely targeting the necessary surfaces for rejuvenation. You will feel the heat of the laser followed by cold air from the built-in cooling system. The laser works to remove damaged and dead skin cells while also stimulating new collagen production.

how long is recovery after laser skin resurfacing?

Following lighter peels, a healing ointment will be applied to the skin, after which you can return home to recover. The skin will appear red, and there will be some irritation and swelling. This should subside within a couple of days and the peeling process will last over a 3 – 5-day timeframe. If you are getting a more intense laser treatment, your recovery time will last longer. The treated areas will most likely be covered by dressings and the burning, irritation, and swelling symptoms will be more intense. Medication can be prescribed to lessen these side effects. The recovery period associated with a deeper laser treatment can last up to 2 – 3 weeks. All patients should minimize their sun exposure after their session and apply sun protection throughout the day. For all laser peel treatments, the skin will naturally crust and flake away. It is crucial to avoid interfering with the healing process to prevent scarring and protect your skin from environmental exposure. Once the peeling process has been completed, your skin will feel softer while looking rejuvenated, clearer, and younger.

How do you prepare for laser skin resurfacing?

The best way to prepare for laser skin resurfacing is to consult with a professional who has experience with the procedure. J. Timothy Katzen, M.D. Beverly Hills advises patients to avoid sun exposure for several weeks before laser skin resurfacing and to use broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect their skin. We may also recommend avoiding blood thinners to reduce your risk of side effects.

Do results from laser skin resurfacing look natural?

Laser skin resurfacing can provide natural-looking results. However, it is important to have realistic expectations about the results of your procedure. Most patients see a noticeable improvement in the appearance of their skin, but it may take several weeks or months for the full effects to be seen.

Does laser skin resurfacing hurt?

Most patients report that laser skin resurfacing in Beverly Hills, CA is relatively painless. However, some people may experience discomfort during the procedure based on their individual tolerance levels. The good news is Dr. Katzen or a member of our team will provide a topical numbing cream to help minimize any discomfort you may feel.

Is laser skin resurfacing safe for all skin types?

Laser skin resurfacing can be safe for most skin types, but certain lasers may pose a higher risk of complications for individuals with darker skin tones. This is because some lasers can cause hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation in darker skin. However, advancements in laser technology have made it possible to customize treatments to reduce these risks. It's essential to work with a skilled provider who can assess your skin type and choose the appropriate laser to minimize any potential complications.

Can laser skin resurfacing help with acne scars?

Yes, laser skin resurfacing is often used to treat acne scars. Ablative lasers, in particular, can remove the damaged top layers of skin, allowing for the formation of new, smoother skin. Non-ablative lasers work by stimulating collagen production, which helps to fill in and reduce the appearance of scars over time. The choice of laser and treatment plan will depend on the severity and type of acne scars you have.

How does laser skin resurfacing address pigmentation issues?

Laser skin resurfacing can be highly effective in treating pigmentation issues such as age spots, sun spots, and melasma. The laser energy targets the pigmented areas, breaking down excess melanin and promoting the growth of new, evenly toned skin. Over time, the treated pigmented areas become lighter and blend more seamlessly with the surrounding skin, leading to a more uniform complexion.
